Apple files for iPod Hi-Fi

Apple Computer has filed with Hong Kong's Intellectual Property Department for trademarks on two new iPod terms, which appear to reference unreleased iPod products or services, AppleInsider has learned.

In a filing made on September 20, 2005, the iPod maker requested a trademark on the term "iPod Hi-Fi," seemingly in reference to an iPod that can reproduce sound, images and video at a higher fidelity than today's models. Alternatively, it's plausible that the term was a name the company once considered for its fifth-generation iPod players that include video capabilities.

A description of iPod Hi-Fi provided by Apple in the filing describes the device broadly as "Computers, computer hardware, computer peripherals, hand held computers, personal digital assistants, electronic organizers, electronic notepads, apparatus for recording, transmission and reproduction of sounds, images, or data."

Separately, sources said that Apple is developing an iPod model with a higher-resolution display and about an inch of additional viewing area. It's unclear if, or when, the company intends to release the device, and no further details were provided.

Fox can add proprietary DRM to Blu-ray discs

This is a most interesting interview that was held by BetaNews with a representative from the HD-DVD camp. A troubling aspect for the future of both the new High Def formats is they are both hinging the success or adoption of their formats on Hollywood content. This, like many things, is a two way street. After all, what good is high definition and players, if their is nothing to watch? On the other hand, we as consumers, will be holding in our hot little hands, veritable digital masters of multi million dollar projects. For that reason, the studios are apprehensive to say the least to start passing these things out with the Internet throbbing in the background and PC enthusiasts sitting with dual core CPU desktops with near terabyte storage systems at the ready. At issue as well is, there are differences of opinion on just how much freedom Joe Blow the consumer should be allowed with said content.

Another problem plaguing Blu-ray development is a requirement placed on the organization when it signed a deal with Fox Studios. Fox had demanded that high-definition DVDs utilize a stricter copy-protection format than AACS, which is employed by both Blu-ray and HD DVD. While HD DVD rejected the demand, Blu-ray conceded.

Knox said Fox was unhappy with the decision to let consumers watch movies where they please using Mandatory Managed Copy. Managed Copy has become a contentious point in the next-generation DVD battle, with HP demanding that Blu-ray require the technology on all discs. However, as Fox's proprietary DRM will run after AACS, the studio could theoretically restrict such portability.

This proprietary format is also rumored to have delayed the PlayStation 3, which will include a Blu-ray drive for the masses. Pioneer is set to launch a $1,800 Blu-ray player in May.

Russian tycoon is spammers' new target

Russia has more in common with Nigeria these days than just oil.

Following up on the politically charged jailing of oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a wave of scam e-mails in the style of Nigeria's notorious spammers have been popping up in inboxes from Moscow to Kentucky.

But instead of impassioned pleas by dead African dictators' aides to move millions of dollars overseas, the appeals appear to come from the inner circle of the man who was once Russia's richest.

"Dear friend, I got your reliable contact from my husband's business diary ..." begins one letter from "Leila Khodorkovsky," claiming to be the billionaire's wife - whose actual name is Inna. The letter requests assistance investing US$45 million (euro37 million) of the tycoon's money and promises compensation.

Another is signed by "Larissa Sosnitskaya," who describes herself as a personal treasurer to Khodorkovsky, seeking a beneficiary for a similar sum that she intends to use "to relocate to the American continent and never to be connected to any of Mikhail Khodorkovsky conglomerates."

While their details - and often grammar - are muddled, the Khodorkovsky-themed spam highlights the notoriety of his case and his eight-year sentence on tax and fraud charges, which critics called Kremlin revenge for his sponsoring of opposition parties.

ATI and Nvidia insouciant about HD DVD and Blu-ray

WE HAD a chance to talk to some of the movers and shakers from both of the biggest graphic camps and you are possibly astonished to learn that they don’t care that much about HD DVD versus Blu-ray fight.

Whatever happens in the HD DVD versus Blu-ray fight both camps are using marchitecture based on the H.264 codec. All ATI and Nvidia cares is that their chips can play H.264 faster and better then the rival side. ATI did a good job with its 5.13 drivers that are supporting much of the advanced video features. ATI likes to call it Avivo and Nvidia is still working on it Pure video branded super video H.264 driver answer. That has jet to come but Nvidia was demonstrating its H.264 driver at CES 2006.

Nvidia is now winning in 3D performance fight but traditionally it loses in Video quality, DVD and now even it H.264 playback. You never know maybe green camp has some secret weapon / driver to gain the video crown for Nvidia but so far Nvidia focused more on 3D rather than video features. That is what its investors want I guess.

Windows XP Wireless Flaw

Every time I think it might be safe to allow someone in my enterprise to start using the wireless in their laptop, something like the latest Windows wireless flaw comes out, convincing me that wireless has a ways to go before it's safe for general usage.

Basically put, by default, Windows XP and 2000 will give themselves a 169.254.X.X IP address if there's no DHCP server around. And if another system is in ad hoc mode nearby, all you have to do is set your system's SSID to the same as the other system and you can join the remote system's wireless network.
